Discover the local cycling history of the Green Belt, Vaartland and the Rupel area with ‘In the wheel of Eddy Merckx’. Ex-pros lead you around the area so you can always have a day’s custom-made outing.

Ludo Peeters, René Dillen, Kurt Onclin and Johnny Macharis guide groups of 8 people or more on these marvellous active tours. They tell you more about their local cycling heroes and show you places where cycling history was made. And you? You just pedal along and enjoy it all.

You can also do a tour with the collector Paul Van Bommel. He has met all the great names in the cycling world and has assembled an impressive collection of cycling memorabilia and the anecdotes to go with them.

René Dillen – ex-professional racing cyclist

René Dillen is a former professional racing cyclist with a career from 1973 to 1980. He rode for, among others, the French teams ‘Sonolor’, ‘Gitane-Campagnolo’ and ‘Lejeune-BP’, the Belgian ‘C&A’ team and, in his final year, for the Spanish ‘KAS-Campagnolo’ team.

René is originally from Wilrijk, but now lives in Schelle. He likes cycling in the Rupel area because it’s so beautiful and quiet. The perfect man to explore the area with.

Johny Macharis – ex-professional racing cyclist

Johny Macharis is an ex-professional racing cyclist whose career lasted from 1989 to 1994. He rode for Westwood, the Swiss Mosoco-Chazal-Westwood and the Dutch Elro Snacks-Tönisteiner. He was mainly known as a track cyclist.

Johny was born and bred in the Rupel area and currently lives in Rumst. Cycling is literally in his blood, and he is the nephew of the well-known Willy ‘Rupske’ Lauwers.

Kurt Onclin – ex-professional racing cyclist

Kurt Onclin is an ex-professional racing cyclist whose career lasted from 1989 to 1995. The teams he rode for included ADR, Tulip Computers, where he was a team-mate of Adri van der Poel, Palmans and Lotto, where he was a team-mate of Johan Museeuw.

Kurt was born and bred in the Rupel area and now lives in Schelle.

Ludo Peeters – ex-professional racing cyclist

Ludo Peeters is a former professional cyclist, with a career from 1974 to 1990. The teams he rode for include ‘Ijsboerke’ and two Dutch ones: ‘Raleigh’ and ‘Superconfex’.

For most of his career he cycled in teams together with, and later for, Jan Raas. He took part in the Tour de France ten times, and finished every time, which was no mean feat. He won three stages and twice wore the yellow jersey for a day.

Paul Van Bommel – collector
