‘On the wheel of Eddy Merckx’ was launched by the Flemish-Brabant Tourist Office, the Rupel Area-Vaartland Tourist Office and the Sportimonium for the centenary of the Tour of Flanders. It goes without saying that its figurehead is Eddy Merckx. Not only is he a hero of the sports world, but he also lives in the area. In this project you can literally and figuratively cycle through the history of bike racing.
‘On the wheel of Eddy Merck’ in the museum
In the ‘Sportimonium’, one of the few museums in the world to be recognised as an ‘Olympic museum’ by the IOC, you can learn about the highlights of cycling history and the memorable career of Eddy Merckx in an interactive quiz and an activity game on a tablet.
Would you like to explore the cycling heritage of our region from the saddle! Then take one of the three circular cycling routes mapped out for the purpose. Each has a theme and panels with more information about cycling history and local cycling heroes. With your smartphone you can scan the QR codes that take you to the interactive site at www.onthewheelofEddyMerckx.be, where you will find a mass of anecdotes, pictures and sounds.
Cycling map and packages
The cycling map costs 2 euro and is on sale at the Sportimonium, tourist offices and cycling cafés along the routes or can be downloaded free from www.onthewheelofEddyMerckx.be.
As a group, you can follow an ex-prof to explore the area and local cycling history according to your own wishes. On this site we also offer you a great selection of packages to maximise your cycling experience in our area.
